HOW IT WORKS
What it Does:
SafeSip is a microfluidic DNA & chemical testing system that calculates the compositional breakdown of any liquid. Whether you are at the bar, suspicious of your city's water supply, on a camping trip, or traveling to a country that may not have a safe drinking supply, SafeSip can help you. It will detect chemical substances and bacteria, as well as harmful metals such as lead, arsenic, etc.
Steps:
Step 1: Make sure the key chain has been charged.

Step 2: Press the black on/off button on the back to turn the keychain on.
Step 3: Dip the testing portion of the SafeSip keychain into the liquid of your choice.
Results:
SafeSip will test the contents, including chemical breakdown, of the liquid and tell you whether it is safe to drink, or not. You will be able to see the contaminants on the small screen under the solar panel.

There will be a red light for NO or a green light for GO.

*If you would want to test again, you will reset the device by pressing the black on/off button on the back.

What is Microfluidic DNA & chemical testing?

Microfluidic systems are devices that include a set of miniaturized components allowing the study and analysis of chemical or biological samples (Understanding-Microfluidics).

In order for this to work, a microfluidic chip is inserted into the testing device. A microfluidic chip is a set of micro-channels etched or molded into a material (glass, silicon or polymer such as PDMS, for PolyDimethylSiloxane). The micro-channels forming the microfluidic chip are connected together in order to achieve the desired features (mix, pump, sort, control bio-chemical environment) (microfluidic-tutorials).
